Safety at the job site. Did you know...?
It is illegal for a roofing job to be carried out without the following safety elements in place
- Hard hats are to be worn at ALL times on the job site.
- Safety harnesses must be worn on the roof at ALL times
- Steel toe cap shoes to be worn at ALL times
- Safety goggles/glasses are to be worn when there is a risk of damage to the eyes
- Ladders are to be secured at the top AND bottom
- All employees are to complete Fall Safety program and carry their completion card
Many roofing companies do not have even one of these safety precautions in place. If a roofing company does not have ALL of these precautions in place on the job it can mean a safety inspector will be called from the Ministry of Labour and the job can be shut down immediately whether or not the job is completed or your roof is made water tight at the time. If the roofing company does not have the money to purchase ALL required safety items immediately your job will be postponed until such times as they do. This may mean your roof is left completely open to the elements as no-one will be allowed back on to the roof until such times as they have all the necessary safety equipment in place. Check with you roofing company to see if they have all these safety elements implemented BEFORE hiring them to do the work.
These are guidelines set out by the Ministry of Labour and cannot be bent or changed under ANY circumstances.
For further information and confirmation on these safety rules you can contact the Ministry of Labour on 905-577-9774 Or on the web at www.labour.gov.on.ca
